Short intro
Soul Finger is the debut album of the Bar-Kays, issued three months after the single of the same name. It was recorded by Tom Dowd and Chris Huston on Friday, June 23, 1967, at the Stax studio in Memphis. Though all but one member of the group were black Ronnie Caldwell being the only white member, the album cover art, by Loring Eutemey, suggests an interracial pop music party feeling. The instrumental band, after being signed in early 1967, was tutored by Al Jackson, Jr. and the other members of. Knucklehead - The Bar-Kays. In December of 1967, four of the group's six members died on the same fateful flight that claimed Otis Redding. Though the Bar-Kay's may not be a household name like Redding, this album shows exactly what the world lost: loose rock-driven funk cut with a dollop of soul and masterfully executed by Memphis' best studio musicians. The title track is a monster of thumping f. Soul Finger. Soul Finger 1967 commences with the title track, which quickly became a Top 20 crossover pop hit in addition to one of the band's best-known works, not to mention a certifiable 'feel good' party anthem. The remainder of the platter follows suit offering up ten further instrumentals that stay true to the precedent that had guided Booker T. the MG's , blending fun upbeat numbers with the occasional slower-tempo side complementing the otherwise teen-oriented and definitely danceable selections.
