Carlos Cipa is only 22 years old, but he has been studying piano since the age of six. After being involved in many music genres, such as jazz, rock, and even punk (where he played the drums), Munich based Cipa decided to return to his roots. And we’re glad he did! The solo piano pieces are clearly influenced by all of my favorite classical composers. I hear Chopin, Debussy, Satie and even Tchaikovsky. Blending minimalism with grandiose and at times powerful chords, Cipa demonstrates his love and knowledge of the instrument, effortlessly taking control of the dynamics, complexity and the classical application of harmony. At the forefront of each recording is the skill with which Cipa executes each composition – this last attribute of the Denovali signed musician is especially prevalent in his live performance, the experience of which is a must. Cipa has recently performed with Poppy Ackroyd and Greg Haines, and will appear once again at Denovali Swingfest in Essen in October of 2013. The Monarch And The Viceroy is Cipa’s only first release, but it already shows much promise for the future works to come. Just like Nils Frahm, who seemed to appear out of nowhere on an obscure label, and then slowly became one of the most renown pianists, Carlos Cipa is charting out a course on which our paths will surely cross a many times. Definitely recommended!

Brilliant album and one of the best Solo-Piano records I heard in years! Reminds me a little bit of George Winston, but has so much more to offer - unbelievable that a man that young can create such beautiful music. A must have for every record collection!

Carlos Cipa is a new collaborant in the modern classical community. 'The Monarch and the Viceroy' is lively and colourful, which makes it one of the best debut albums so far.

This young 22-year-old composer has been trained in classical music since the age of 6, but as many other teenagers, he soon began to feel the boundaries too tight. As time passed, he discovered previously hidden territories of music: commencing with drumming, he tasted of jazz, punk, and indie-rock, finally settled down with all the experience at keyboard instrumentation. His debut piano solo album has been taken up by Denovali Records, a German label, mostly characterised by ambient, dark-jazz, metal and experimental electronica - now entering gently and assertively into the constantly expanding circle of contemporary classical music.

Although 'The Monarch and the Viceroy' contains strictly piano-based solos, Cipa unambiguously is a new herald of the so-called "modern classical ambient" tendency, a meeting and fusion of classical and modern ambient music. Following some clear, minimalistic styling (admittedly inspired by Erik Satie and Claude Debussy), Cipa still seems to run counter to young pianists' often boring and philistine ideas that usually limit the complexity of song structure. On the one hand, the heritage of extinct generations' pianists and music school experience can be clearly recognised in this young guy's accuracy in solid structures. On the other hand, there's a kind of freedom in drawing inspiration from more popular music and crossing the borders with compound chord constructions or improvisational stand outs. In these cases one can feel the difference between an untrained artist and a composer with a massive background, built up with many years' hard work.

The album is relatively short with its 50 minutes. And notwithstanding that the temper is cooled down with mellow and calm themes, letting the listener to chill out for a while - the overall tempo is remarkably energetic and drifting. Therefore the mood and emotional scale is wide and diverse, cleverly avoiding the trite sadness and wannabe-gloomy tones, hyped by some contemporaries. But, surprisingly, the only (hardly noticable) weak point of the album derives from its otherwise marvellous colourfulness. The twelve short pieces raise just too many things. Cipa surely amazes the listener with great tunes and small arpeggios, one after the other, but sometimes forgets to take the time for them, not letting them to evolve, nor the listener to follow the march of good ideas. They tend to grab us, suck us into their very own world, then suddenly jump forward, letting us behind - and the piece somewhat unfinished. At some points it's downright the excitingly twisting leitmotiv, which is unexpectedly cut at the highlight. The best example might be 'Human Stain', which starts to build a stunningly serious theme, and right before reaching the catharsis, it just breakes down.

Nevertheless, Carlos Cipa shakes up the melting pot of young newcomer pianists burning on low heat sometimes. We have a serious hope in him, waiting for his career to boom, and strenghten the elite group of great composers like Nils Frahm, Dustin O'Halloran, Otto Totland or the veteran Ludovico Einaudi.
