Death Grips are angry. It's unclear why. But on their major label debut, the Sacramento noise group's monomaniacal desire to rain down fiery destruction on the powers-that-be is crystal-clear, even if nothing else is. Most of the album is an alien swarm of buzzing and sputtering noises. Death Grips' Zach Hill, a drummer for the fiendishly technical noise-rock band Hella, has also chewed his way through numerous projects, including work with Marnie Stern and Boredoms, and bits of all this float through The Money Store's wildly unpredictable 41 minutes. Whatever L. Reid was thinking when he signed these guys, he surely didn't meddle in their creative process

My copy is extremely quiet and sounds awesome. Many people complain about the lack of bass, but I don't really feel like it's that big of a problem. The mix definitely improves certain songs for me personally, i've seen footage especially. My only complaint is that the record itself was extremely dirty upon opening my sealed copy and thorough cleaning was required. The artwork is minimalistic and weird, fitting for the album. Great sounding piece though, absolutely recommended.

Its almost like we are back in the 50s with this record, funnily enough. Not music wise, but sound wise its very mono with much in the center and rarely utilizing the stereo image well.Otherwise its decent with good balance. Its got bass and highs for sure although a bit lacking in some parts for the former. It is cut somewhat quiet and even though cranking volume can be scary with these harsh sounds its not to be feared with how its tamed quite nicely. It is Death Grips though so bedtime music should not be expected.Vocals are nicely separated and present thankfully, but I feel like the soundstage lacks some depth overall. The drums are an attempt at this but they just end up sounding really small instead of distant and that really is a shame.Pressing wise its not the best either, with some low surface noise but worst being the clicks.Again, it might not be too detrimental for this type of music so not a huge let down per se.Equipment Used:Rega RP1 with Paratrace tipped Nagaoka MP-200Cyrus 2 AmplifierSystem Fidelity SF-3050 Tower SpeakersCustom made HQ Speaker Cables

The bass is a bit shy on some tracks but that may have been a result of mastering (I can still get some good lows if I turn volume up so YMMV), although the mids/highs sound better than digital in my opinion. I recently got a sealed copy and my record was very dusty/dirty in the grooves, and it needed a good cleaning and it pretty much eliminated pops/clicks and improved the overall sound quality greatly. The extra lyrics sheet included and printed inner were pretty neat. Completely worth it for the prices you can still get new copies at right now.

I received my copy today and did a little comparison on my setup using a DAC to feed the unmastered FLAC to my amp. (AR-3A speakers, Sansui SR222 Mk3 w/ Jico stylus, and Yaqin MS20L amp)Long story short the bass is shy on the LP compared to the FLAC which is disappointing. It was noticeable on all tracks, especially, System Blower, and Punk Weight. The FLAC's low end was much more pronounced and sounded great, but when i'd switch to the LP feed i'd be a bit disappointed. The LP's mids and highs were a bit clearer than the FLAC. Although I suspect that's more to do with the quality of my DAC.If I didn't know how amazing the low end sounded on the unmastered FLAC I probably wouldn't be disappointed with the LP, but I do, so I am.I also tested the LP on some Tannoy Revolution R3 floor speakers (played on a Rega Planar 3) and the bass was almost non-existent (note that those Tannoy's produce clear, well defined bass on other hip hop LPs I have.)Having said all that, the LP sounds OK, i'm just disappointed after listening the FLAC and having the bass shake the room, because the LP definitely isn't doing that.

Too bad about the bass. Vinyl setups are all over the place in terms of EQ. So many variables. IMO an equalizer is a necessity (a mid/side EQ if possible). I bet with a bit of EQ the bass on your LP would sound the same as on FLAC (bar the increased prevalence of low end rumble / surface noise), unless the sub is actually straight up chopped off. Not too familiar with this album in detail; if there is sub in the side channels then it is likely rolled off more severely than in the center channel - this is where a M/S EQ comes in handy. I use an iZotope vst with M/S EQ matching to match records to FLAC when they are too out of line. It gets LPs impressively close to FLACAlso (opinion alert) DAC/ADCs are overrated as hell IMO, I doubt it would take that nice of a DAC/ADC to be indistinguishable from a "high end" one in a double blind test. Also I bet a lot of "clarity" is just differences in EQ. I'm more than open to evidence to the contrary

Pretty fucking stellar. The dynamic range (on my copy) was stunningly wide. The overall package is a good bargain for the average price of 25 to 30 bucks. You get a dope looking innersleeve (that comes with a poly sleeve stuffed inside of it), a lyric sheet, a download code, and (if you get the first pressing) a NLDW sticker. Make sure to have some cleaning solution on standby though, as the record comes not as shiny as you'd hope it to.

I have one of these, not sure if I can disclose anything new but I think they're just free promo copies sent out to music journalists for reviews. Maybe prior to release or maybe just at the same time, but kind of scarce in a way I suppose. If it's prior to public release that could be one reason for the warnings.

I now own the album so I can give you a more accurate response. The pressing itself is solid, quiet with no scratches and surface noise. Sound quality itself is alright, it sounds a bit compressed and there's less bass then other hip hop albums I own; very reminiscent of the digital copies I've heard. Again, the mastering and mix could use some work to fit the vinyl format. If you love the album, want a vinyl copy, and can't get your hands on the Black/White split remaster, get it. I just got mine for $16 and I have no regrets. If you want the most "audiophile" copy though, get a CD copy or the black/white split LP for a better mastering and mix job.TL;DR It sounds fine, pick it up if you love the album and want a cheap vinyl copy.

Just checked/added the runnout codes and it looks like this is the same exact plate/master as the original press. Any perceived difference in quality is probably due to the condition your individual copies may have shipped out of the plant. I'm not surprised this didn't get remastered or re-plated considering most major labels producing vinyl these days don't care too much about the quality. Still, not a bad pressing.

Has anyone compared the sound quality of this one to the original black one yet?To me it seems to sound a bit better surprisingly? My original black sounded pretty compressed and muffled a little while this sounds a bit "clearer". No mention of it being remastered though so seems a bit strange..Nice quiet vinyl too! I heard no pops or surface noise on mine.

I looked for this at my (small) and local shop without avail. I don't think they distributed very many of these to the actual stores. I even waited in line for it, to give you some perspective on how small this local shop is, I was able to get multiple copies of Government Plates when it came out at that very shop. Maybe that doesn't say much but my guess is that they didn't ship these out to every store as one might assume.

I was supposed to interview Death Grips before the release -- never happened, because they canceled their tour and vanished the week it was supposed to go down -- but I was sent an advanced copy and it was pretty standard. I'd have to find it, but from what I remember, it had the No Love sticker in it and might have had a hole punch, but nothing too crazy. Yours isn't a standard copy. It has to be rarer than that.

Sounds like you might have a representative copy or a copy that was used to let higher ups listen before it was totally released. People would probably kill for something so exclusive and official, almost like a test pressing.

I have a WATERMARKED DISK copy of this album on cd, comes in a black sleeve with track listings on the back, the disk is silver, with epic logo and says "this cd belongs to , 0029, David Hepworth, Word. Maybe some kind of pre-release/custom copy for critics/reviewers? Idk does anyone know anything else about this? Has an FBI anti piracy warning on kek.

That's interesting. I was sent an advanced copy for review and it wasn't like that. That led me to believe that it, possibly, belonged to someone within EPIC. So... I just decided to google the name and it turns out that it used to belong to a writer from the Guardian, but, more than that, he's also the founder for numerous magazines, including MOJO.Value-wise, I don't know what it's worth, but Death Grips fans are pretty hardcore, so I wouldn't pay attention to the other person who commented. Especially, since he's still direct messaging people about if they'd be willing to sell him a sticker that he offered $20 for 7 months ago, just above this comment.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Hepworth

The only thing wrong with it may just be the lack of a certain track... 'Hacker'. But that is just me, on that one.Otherwise, yes; I wholeheartedly agree with you that this IS the definitive version.

The pressing itself is decent but the mastering is pretty terrible. The unmastered versions are definitely the ones to listen to, meaning that this sits unplayed (at least for me).

Don't get me wrong. I think this album is wonderful.... I love it... but definitely not as groundbreaking as Exmilitary. (possibly due to it being on a major label and of course watered down some as a result. I mean, c'mon, no samples?!) It's kind of feels more "listenable" in a lot of ways. Like it's more well-rounded. But it's not as raw and jagged. This one feels a lot more like they've settled on "their style" if you know what I mean. And it's no where near as pissed off and bonkers sounding, ...which is a tiny bit disappointing. I remember reading that MC Ride lost his voice recording this album and I thought "OH SHIT! THIS IS GONNA BE EVEN CRAZIER!". But it's not. If anyone should be ramping it up with each release, it's Death Grips.Like I said; great but not mind-blowing. It's more refined, less raw. Still good, but not as mindblowing as I know they can be.

I can totally agree that this is a good album but a small letdown coming from Exmilitary. Less aggressive, more melodic. But how come you think that there's no sampling? The tracks feature samples from The Beatles (Double helix) over Salt-N-Pepa (I've seen footage) to Boredoms (The fever (aye aye)).

This was originally put out for free on their website as a mixtape. No Love Deep Web was also leaked on the website for free. This ended up losing them their label deal. Please get your facts straight.
