In June 2013, the duo embarked on the Tales of Us Tour to promote the album. While Tales of Us is Goldfrapp's most consistent album in terms of mood and sound, the duo still adds some variety. Thea brings film noir to the dancefloor with shivery synths and a beat that begins with footsteps, and Clay ends this collection of heartache on a relatively idealistic note. Even with these slight detours, Tales of Us isn't as immediate as, say, Supernature. Regardless, it's Goldfrapp's most sophisticated work to date, and one of their most consistently satisfying albums. Track Listing. When this fantastic album, 'Tales of Us' was released in September of 2013 I purchased it on CD. A few years later I moved and could only take a few things with me. This album made it of course. Now in 2019 I decided to purchase 'Tales of Us' on vinyl. I find that recently the record player gets more use since Cd's have been slowly fazed out from homes, cars, and personal spaces. There has been a lot of warnings about quality of vinyl pressings with few places offering an honest review. Rest assured fans of Goldfrapp as this is an excellent pressing. The second the needle hit the record the sound enveloped the room. It was a gorgeous experience. Since 'Tales of Us' is an intimate recording it is important that the quality of the vinyl is top notch just like this. It is a must have experience on vinyl for any Goldfrapp fan. The gatefold sleeve is thick and printed in high quality ink. The poster is an image I hadn't seen during this era of Goldfrapp which was a nice surprise. My copy didn't come with a CD but it did include a download code on the sleeve near the credits. Overall it is a treasure to behold. A+++

So, I just received a copy of this, sealed and beautiful. Opened it up and ran a velvet brush over it to remove the factor particulates. All normal procedure. Played amazing! THEN... hit the last track on Side 1, "Alvar". 2/3 of the way through the song it hits a looping skip. Pulled it off, brushed and wiped with a microfiber and record cleaner solution. Same outcome. So disappointed! I am now working out details for a return. I have read on Discogs that the US pressing is much better. Ironic, huh. Oh well.

Mine also came without a CD. Do the CD-containing copies really have this catalog-numbers? Or the barcode? Is there a sticker etc. which indicates the CD?

I saw mention that the poster included in the vinyl edition within the box is different from the (EU) vinyl edition released separately. I see the separate release sometimes has a hype sticker, but, otherwise, Is this the case? Also is the EAN/UPC and/or catalogue number different?

TALES OF US sees Goldfrapp operating between the stripped down folk of SEVENTH TREE and the moody electronics of FELT MOUNTAIN. Building each track as a narrative around a name, this album sees the band engaging in poetic storytelling, from the delicate “Jo” to the quiet exploration of gender identity on “Annabel.” The folksiness blossoms fullest at the start of “Drew,” bolstered by thick strums of double bass, before it culminates in an orchestral fantasia. The general atmosphere of the album leans definitely towards the contemplative, though “Thea” brings in the refracted electronics and plodding percussion. But the acoustic guitar returns for the melancholy “Simone” and the lo-fi echoes and whistles of “Stranger.” The cinematics of “Laurel” evoke a foggy parting between two lovers, while the strumming of “Clay” ends the album on a hopeful note. Gorgeous.

every copy of this record I've tried suffers from pressing faults on side A, (I've had 4!!!) - just played the USA pressing & it plays great - so if your looking for a copy to play & listen to go for the USA pressing (the poster is also way better)

This is a wonderful album. Finally: something on par with Felt Mountain. The middle albums were good, but not consistently great for me. (Seventh Tree was a brief respite.)Alison has a beautiful voice and, considering her wide range of albums, can obviously use it however she likes. I like the more experimental instrumentals and purity of Felt Mountain, these qualities are present on Tales of Us. Playing Felt Mountain again it's amazing how accomplished it is regardless of whether it's a first album.I couldn't say that Tales of Us is stronger than Felt Mountain (as FM reaches its pinnacle perfectly). Tales of Us is perhaps more cohesive and 'more mature' (but 'mature' can be such an immature term regarding music).Goldfrapp are also great live. When Alvar was played, the strings got more and more pronounced - a frenzy, almost anarchic with their twists; the beauty always keeping them in control. Such contrast in power and beauty is amazing to achieve, fantastic to hear. Yet this happens often on Felt Mountain and Tales of Us. Another track, also great live is Thea, the percussion is loud like constant punches, but Alison's voice, pure, isn't fragile and demands more attention than the drum.(Felt Mountain still offers the more rarified of aria. . . )

the issue is on track 4 'Ulla' and same on the other side... the song plays fine at the beginning then starts to sound like slower and then it gets stuck there for about 10 secs. I see a clear inconsistency in the surface compared to the rest of the vinyl.

See loobz' reply on Goldfrapp - Tales Of Us. Could you tell me what exactly is the issue? I'm wondering how present it is.

There is some confusion over tracks 1 and 5 on these releases. See original UK versus US edition, the Hong Kong edition and the limited box set. Judging by track lengths and musician credits, I'd say JO is the shorter track with double bass loop, and ALVAR is the longer track with guitars and drums. That would mean the original UK/Europe CD tracks 1 and 5 were swapped (ALVAR as track 1, erroneously titled and credited as JO), and subsequent editions (US, box set) corrected to match the original credits. The track times for the Hong Kong edition should be confirmed, because they are now the same for 1 and 5.

I read here http://hifipig.com/goldfrapp-tales-of-us/ that the vinyl suffers from Alison's vocals being too compressed and harsh. Can anyone confirm this? I was thinking about buying the vinyl but maybe go just for the digital version instead ...

Hi loobz - I had initially found that the LP was not as "sharp" or detailed as the CD (which is very good btw) but I recently changed my cartridge to a more resolving one and found that the LP is absolutely faultless. Well recorded, well mastered, and well pressed. I am enjoying it very much (some six months later, but better late than never), and I am finding that it is the best pressing of my Goldfrapp LPs to date (including Felt Mountain, Supernature and Seventh Tree). Side B is my favourite.I hope this helps.Eric

I was thinking about buying the vinyl but maybe go just for the digital version instead ...Hi Loobz - I confirm your impression. The digital version is a lot more detailed and subtle, which is a shame in this recording. I find that this is the case in most of Goldfrapp's records, with the possible exception of Felt Mountain. I would nevertheless advise to buy the vinyl edition anyway, since it has the digital version bundled (and the artwork in large format is nice).
