Johann Sebastian Bach's Magnificat, BWV 243, is a musical setting of the biblical canticle Magnificat. It is scored for five vocal parts two sopranos, alto, tenor and bass, and a Baroque orchestra including trumpets and timpani. It is the first major liturgical composition on a Latin text by Bach. In 1723, after taking up his post as Thomaskantor in Leipzig, Bach set the text of the Magnificat in a twelve movement composition in the key of E-flat major. The CD comes in standard jewel case. Karl Münchinger was one of the foremost interpreters of 18th Century music prior to the advent of period performance practice. He could usually be counted on to give finely-honed renditions of standard Baroque repertoire, informed by historical understanding, but not overly academic. His approach to Bach was usually objective, plainspoken, favoring a lighter tread than his contemporary Karl Richter-though Richter conveyed a deeper understanding of the Bach's spiritual heritage. He usually obtained great soloists such as Ameling, Watts, Prey,Minton, Krenn, Krause and Hamari. The soloists and Stuttgart CO are major assets. The conducting is more variable. Yate Music Tagger. He helped to revive the now-ubiquitous Canon in D by Johann Pachelbel, through recording it with his Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra in 1960. Münchinger is also noted for restoring baroque traditions to the interpretation of Bach's oeuvre, his greatest musical love: moderate-sized forces, judicious ornamentation, and rhythmic sprightliness, though not period instruments. read more
