This is scary. So basically, if buying used (or even new), one can't be sure they're getting a legit copy because this release looks like a total clone of the legitimate one: https://www.discogs.com/Metallica-HardwiredTo-Self-Destruct/release/10953087Is there anything that can be used to tell it's a counterfeit?

Absolute perfect pressing.. Sounds AMAZING! A far cry better than the earlier Blackened pressings, some of which were unplayable. Both discs are dead flat and not a single pop or crack to be heard. The mastering is PERFECT!! Great mix, killer production.. Overall a SUBERB album. Definitely the best Metallica album in a long time.

So is the blue color of the first disc only visible under strong light? Also, did anyone else's come "disassembled"? The one I found had the shrink slightly torn but it was otherwise new it seems, and when I opened it up all the discs, sleeves and lyric sheets were kind of loosely packed. Does look nice when you put all the discs in the sleeves though.

It's funny how they switched "Am I Savage" and "Dream No More" around, in the CD, "Dream No More" was first, but in this version, "Am I Savage" is first. I wonder why? (Not that it's a bad thing).

Might have to do with how much space they could fit on one side of the LP. One song was probably shorter and just fit.

I don't know why, but this was in Amazon at $28. Even considering shipping to my country it was a no brainer, I had to got this! And I am completely satisfied, the discs are beautiful, it sounds amazing, and regarding the songs, it has really good compositions. Plus, the packaging is great, just everything about it: the sleeves, inserts, and prints. And it has the amazing Ronnie Rising Medley. This is the must-have version of the album.

Terrible pressing. First off, my turntable plays records perfectly. Rarely does it ever skip, and it's generally the record's fault when a skip does occur. With that said; Purchased one copy, and it skipped like mad throughout each song on both discs. Sent in for a replacement, and this time, both discs were warped, and skipped even worse than the first copy. Third try, it skipped less than the previous two copies, but till skipped throughout most of the songs. I got a refund. I'm certainly never going to try from this pressing again.
Netlandinhabitant

I had the same problem, they told me to throw both copies away... same with my Master of Puppets, Black Album, and Death Magnetic. Blackened Recordings (Warner pressing plants, I believe) have the WORST quality control.

seems more like a pressed gimmick rather than a true test pressing on this release if they were pressing in such a large volume for a test pressing and then used as a promotional tool.

Pretty disappointing overall, especially given the 8 plus years wait between albums. As highlighted below the album starts off at a decent clip, opening track Hardwired a cracking three minutes of energy (though personally for me the chorus is well cheesy). Atlas Rise, similarly hits the mark, loving the Maiden style guitar harmonies towards the end.Trouble is the longer this album goes on, the worse it gets. Some of the tracks are woefully forgettable filler. Murder One I feel particularly bad, especially given the songs subject.Far too long and just nowhere near good enough, certainly not the return to form that certain reviewers would have you believe.

They begin with a nice thrash/speed song & they end with just one more thrash/speed song (like GRIP INC which is the best song of the album). The other songs on this album are fillers (for one more time). Pure Metallica fans are over 40-45 years old & they grew up with them (Kill Em All / Ride the Lightning / Master of Puppets / ...And Justice for all). Mr Hetfield & Mr Ulrich respect your older fans. Don't forget why you took the instruments & play some decades ago. Except if you cannot thrash anymore! But i have to say that this time "touched" their original sound, better than any other time. When i say "original sound" i mean MASTER OF PUPPETS. A little bit more & we would have a reborn. 15.000 copies for RSD (Reseller Store Day)....for the 'collectors-resellers' Check here: http://www.recordstoreday.com/UPC/858978005325 10/10 for the sound / sound engineering / mastering! $Cheers$

Two different red vinyls from Europe..? I've been looking "everywhere", but can't find more than one.https://www.discogs.com/Metallica-HardwiredTo-Self-Destruct/release/9359830

As for the CD and digital releases (Vinyl seems to be good, as expected by the format): no dynamics, it's very compressed, not as badly as DM but it's still bad at Album DR6. As for the music itself, the album starts out just fine, nothing amazing but good, then it drops to mediocre and plainly boring, especially the 2nd set with Load era style of songs. All and all very mediocre and boring album. And there's the compression/brickwalled problem. Will not buy. Not even if the compression problem is fixed in some new edition/remaster.

So I bought the limited edition red vinyl and the deluxe version, did anyone get any skips in the first two tracks of side A?

Check your tracking force if you can't see any defects on the surface. Increasing it just a bit may stop this from happening.
Bladebringer

Nope, I had no problems with any of mine, though I bought mine directly from the Metallica website and not some other retailers, except for the Red vinyl version, which I got at a local Wooden Nickel store in Fort Wayne.

besides paper dust you can also be a plastic groove shaving. especially for a mass production "Limited edition". Look really close and try the dust gun before you try a clean.
Mananara
Mananara
Sometimes with new records there's a lot of paper dust from the factory. And it can get imbedded. I used a computer dust spray can with the plastic tube tip. Give that a shot before you try and clean. If that doesn't work, then depending upon where you bought return. I got mine on Amazon so I could return mine for any imperfections. And the price was a few bucks cheaper, same preorder...same records... hope that helps. I do empathize if you got a bum disc. You might increase the weight on your stylus and that can help...and just a notch up on the anti skating might correct. But know if you haven't replace your needle for a while and you increase the weight you'll eventually increase the wear, hence...readjust for your other "children" "babies" "hotboxes"!

2500 seems very low. Saw many copies in my local stores. I'd say 10'000 or more copies. Lots of websites have it for sale too

Great dynamic sound. Classic Metallica - many times closer to their "master of puppets" times. Great mastering from BG. About color limited edition? I don't know what to say & i think it's NOT strictly limited...METALLICA is a famous band (even my 65 years old aunt likes them) & money...is money! So, it will be unlimited...or soon it will be repressed...

They are basically the same. But they are pressed by two different plants.Pallas(i think?) for the US/Canada release and MPO for the European release.I've noticed that the CD and buttons are glued to a thick glossy piece of black paper in the EU press. In the US press the buttons in a ziplock bag.

According to these numbers, the DR on the vinyl versions is ridiculously good compared to cd or even hi-res downloads: http://dr.loudness-war.info/album/list?artist=MetallicaAlso it looks like the european pressing has slightly more dynamics than the us pressing.

Likely because Lords of Summer came out as a single both on Vinyl and CD on an RSD a while back hence it makes sense to me that they would leave that off this box set.

I don't know a number of copies, but I guess that theres must be a few thousands left. Lords of Summer is in the 3rd vinyl, the red one, whit the live premiere of Hardwired in Minnesota, one track each side, on 33 rpm, its part of the deluxe version of the entire album, since Lords was just a single the past couple of years

The metadata attached to the FLAC files indicate that they were sourced from the deluxe, 3-CD version of the release. This is cause for suspicion that the fidelity of the audio is no better than the CDs.

According to statements by officials at the metallica.com forums, the 16 bit flac files are sourced from the (better sounding) MfIT master, while the hi-res version was made using the same master as the cd by mistake.

Good news from Metallica.com:"Thank you for purchasing a high-resolution download of Hardwired…To Self-Destruct!It has come to our attention that many audiophiles are not pleased with the dynamic range of the 24-bit/96KHz digital download. Rather than continue selling a download that is not up to audiophile standards, we have decided to offer up an alternative. We have created new 24-bit/44.1KHz digital downloads from the Mastered for iTunes digital master which features a greater dynamic range than was previously available with the 24-bit/96KHz download. To download the 24-bit/44.1KHz version of Hardwired…To Self-Destruct, simply go back to the web receipt where you initially downloaded your files and download again. You can access that web receipt either in the download email that you received or by visiting your order history at metallica.com/me.We hope you continue to enjoy the new album!"
