His latest project The United Nations of Sound, however, is certainly. Recruiting the formidable talents of revered session players Steve Wyreman guitar Paul DW Wright bass and drummer Derrick Wright, Ashcroft then decided to call up a producer whose recent work he admired so far, so normal. But that man happened to be No ID, a hip hopRnB aficionado dubbed the Godfather of Chicago hip hop. The album was released in the United States under the name of Richard Ashcroft. It is a collaboration with hip-hop producer No I. Kanye West, Jay-Z, Drake and this track features strings courtesy of arranger Benjamin Wright Gladys Knight, Barry White. We built a great atmosphere early on, Ashcroft told Spin magazine of the song. No I. put a fantastic tribal loop on it. I built up a big monk-like chant with some whistles to give it some Morricone flavor. Benjamin took it to a whole new level with the strings. Some of America's best helped make it. How did the UN of Sound go so terribly wrong Instinctually cool, Ashcroft is a borderline mystical figure, effortlessly outclassing his more lumpen peers, the Gallagher brothers. He has bone structure, and a fully operational sense of populist uplift. The United Nations of Sound should have been a lush, stirring work. Instead, it misfires wildly. Last January's single, Are You Ready, still has the capacity to stir, especially if you imagine Ashcroft waving his arms like a testifying mantis. But the sharp intakes of breath begin almost immediately with Born Again

I really, really tried to like this. I've been a fan of the Verve since the early 1990s (I lean more towards their pre-"Urban Hymns" material—but even their final album, "Forth", had its brilliant moments.) However, this album is a tone-deaf (not literally tone-deaf) mess. Ploddy and facile, preachy, with limp, lackluster attempts at Mad Richard's tried and true soul-stirring bombast of the past. Yet this is all ego and fluff with no anchoring underpinnings. It only takes a few songs before you realize that Richard now surrounds himself only with yes-men (and -women). He's certainly madder now than he was twenty years ago, but not in a good way. He has more in common with "Aguirre, the Wrath of God" than Syd Barrett. Alas. An outrageously awful and disappointing album.
The decline of Ashcroft as a creative force is truly depressing. Same with the most recent album. Forth was pretty good, all told, as was the Glastonbury performance that capped it off, but everything he's done (outside of the brief Verve return) since the first few solo singles (which were demoed in The Verve period) has been cliched garbage. I can't see any way back for the man. The wheels are off.
