Short intro

The Return of the Durutti Column is the debut studio album by English band The Durutti Column. It was released in January 1980, through record label Factory. The initial two thousand copies also included a flexi-disc single with two tracks by producer Martin Hannett: First Aspect of the Same Thing and Second Aspect of the Same Thing. The original 3600 LP sleeves were made of coarse sandpaper similar to the Situationist book Mémoires, designed to scratch LPs which were placed on either side of it. Sketch for Summer 2. The Durutti Column - Sleep Will Come. Released in the glow of post-punk fervor in late-'70s Manchester, one would think Return would consist of loud, aggressive sheet-metal feedback, but that's not the way Vini Reilly works. With heavy involvement from producer Martin Hannett, who created all the synth pieces on the record as well as producing it, Reilly on Return made a quietly stunning debut, as influential down the road as his labelmates in Joy Division's effort with Unknown Pleasures. Poles apart musically, if not ideologically, Durutti Column nevertheless stands alongside Joy Division as yet another late 70's group trying desperately to avoid the cliches of a rock culture that had at the time disintegrated into facile entertainment and crass commercialism. As such, when it was initially released in 1979, The Return of the Durutti Column defied categorization

It came with a very VERY static record, cover kinda worn up and a track that's different from the original: beginning.still, it's very cool and it's a good sounding copy, for the original get a copy from late 80s without sandpaper.

Wondering how this pressing sounds. Could anybody comment on the sound quality, please?

This label is notorious for having sound quality issues. Packaging is nice, and my pressing was clean, but audio is real hit or miss on this label -- I've heard they source from CDs. That being said, I'll take an affordable version of this until I can get an original at the right price.

This version does *not* have the excellent, guitar-only track that begins side two of the pressing with the black textured sleeve and paintings, and is listed as "Beginning." That track runs 1:37. Instead, it has a longer track titled "Beginning," which is way, way less interesting, and has drums. This is unfortunate, since the shorter "Beginning" is a haunting, beautiful, albeit brief track, and it's what I'm used to hearing at the start of side two, while this longer "Beginning" is just kind of ho-hum. So, that's something to keep in mind for anyone who is interested in getting this particular reissue.

Remember when this came out. The whole LP is absolutely brilliant. Cracker of an album. Beats me why there isn't more music of this level produced today.

I have an interesting copy given to me by Steve Hopkins (Invisible Girls) and friend of Vini and Martin - indeed they played in bands together. Steve was often in the studio with Vini and this copy was one of the original pressings in a white cardboard sleeve before the sandpaper was stuck on! The sleeve is signed to Steve by Vini and Alan Wise (Factory Records Svengali). I have had a copy since 1982. This has the title in silver with identical layout/spacing to the black paint version. Is it likely to be a fake?

There's at least copies with white stencil, I wouldn't doubt another color exists unless it's a fact only black and white exist. I do not doubt though that someone would stencil a copy on their own for whatever purpose.

An absolutely drop-dead gorgeous album of harmonically sophisticated and tearjerking guitar compositions, minimalistically yet artfully woven and executed by Vini Reilly. It's a brief 28 minutes (and the especially short duration of side 2 - with one song being repeated in an alternate mix - really highlights this), but every track is intelligently concise, sucking you into its strikingly immersive world with every next set of multilayered notes Reilly plucks.I'm serious - TRotDC is that otherworldly. It's that stunning a melancholy display of genuine human emotion.... the instrumentation is almost 'superhuman', as if Reilly had been playing with three pairs of hands at once.OK, maybe I'm got a little out of control there, but either way, this is essential listening for those who like mellow, laid-back AND throbbing minimalistic music like I do. This gets my easy vote for one of the best albums of 1980.... and the 80's period. It's been an all-time favourite for over a decade, so give it a try if you're in the mood!

still not sure about the design credit to Saville for the original sleeve. In the "Factory Records Complete Graphic Album" book by Matthew Robertson from around 2006, Dave Rowbotham (the original member of The Durutti Column) was credited in that book for the sleeve designs. Although ony Wilson obviously lit a spark for the legendary sandpaper sleeve...

Talking about it today, though, it’s clear Saville still has a complex relationship with FACT 14. “When Tony mentioned to me the Dadaist proposition of a book with a sandpaper cover that violently damaged your other books, I thought, ‘Yes, that’s a powerful, iconoclastic gesture.’ And I also saw how it could be transposed or transported to the format of a record cover. But I did feel, even just instinctively, that there were some aspects of it that were incompatible with itself.” He laughs. “Sandpaper and vinyl records… it’s not the most comfortable partnership.” http://daily.redbullmusicacademy.com/2014/04/return-of-the-durutti-column-feature

I wish I had read your reviews, guys, as my newly ordered mint copy has the same track listing. It's interesting but it doesn't quite work: Sketch For Summer is, after all, the opener of all openers. I have just tried to change the track listing on Discogs but it won't let me for some reason. Anyway, be warned everyone!

The last CD edition of "The Return Of The Durutti Column" by Factory Benelux, finally explains the complete mess of the side2 tracklist in many releases of this album:http://factorybenelux.com/the_return_of_the_durutti_column_fbn114cd.htmlhttp://www.discogs.com/Durutti-Column-The-Return-Of-The-Durutti-Column/release/5674888"Beginning" is the 1:37 track B1 of the first and third UK pressing, shifted as track 5 in the second pressing.Track B1 of the second pressing, lasting 2:37, is an "Untitled" track. This is the original side 2 tracklist of first and third pressing:B1. It’s no nightmare — it’s rather simple, really. There never was an untitled track — there was only ever a hidden (as they say of CDs) or unlisted track that was simply a different mix of “Sketch for Winter.” If your ears don’t tell you that this unlisted track is a version of “Sketch for Winter”, well . . . I can’t help you.So forget the final, unlisted track for a moment. That leaves nine songs and nine titles. The original sandpaper-sleeve issue of course has only eight other songs, which means — gasp — there’s a song missing. People fetishize this release as the canonical version, so everyone seems reluctant to think it was simply a printing or pressing error on the first issue. But if you’re willing to believe that, for whatever reason, there was simply a production mistake, the only question is whether the song that is brought back in all 10-track releases is “Beginning” or “In D”. Well, on the 10-track releases — it is labeled as “Beginning”, so in good faith that means “In D” was shifted to the penultimate slot. Problem solved. I don’t know how or why, and I don’t care. This aligns with the explanation in Rob Stanzel’s discography from almost 20 years ago. It also aligns with the Japanese CD release, where there are nine titled songs and one hidden track with no title. But further — I don’t know much about music, but years ago I ran all of the songs through a computer program that would identify the key of a song. The only song on TRotDC in the key of D is the one labeled “In D” in the next-to-last slot on 10-track releases. It is frustrating to me that this quote-unquote controversy keeps going. But every time I buy and rip one of the CD reissues, the first thing I do is retitle and reorder the songs to match the Japanese release and refuse to lose any sleep over it.

The Italian edition has 10 tracks, featuring a new (untitled) track as B1 and durations of 1:37 for Beginning and 2:25 for In 'D' (= Sketch For Winter (Version)) but only In 'D' is credited.

Just wish to mention that the Italian pressing appears to have be out of order. "Sketch for summer" is actually the last track of Side A. Does this ring true for anyone else?
Musical Aura Island
Musical Aura Island
It certainly does - my Italian copy features it the same. The a side opens with "Requiem for a father" and finishes with "Sketch for summer" - in a way "Sketch for summer" is not bad to close one side of the record but knowing about it as the record's original opening, it is too bad some of these editions feature a total mess in terms of track order and title references. The italian version of the LP that I have also features this energetic opener on side 2, which I related immediately to the very first title on that page - "Jazz", which now happens is actually an untitled track nothing to do with that specific title. But then again, this whole situation adds to the charm and the "subversive" factor of this Durutti masterpiece. :)

Hi, just commenting that the tracklist may not be correct - please see the photo of the B-side label which only lists 5 tracks. It does not say In 'D' A and In 'D' B. If this is one of the 10-track versions then my guess (as I don't own this version) is that it is the same as all the other 10-track versions and the extra track (not included on the 9-track versions) is the first track on the B-side, the next 5 tracks being audibly the same ones as the 9-track versions except in a slight different running order.

Like nothing that could have been anticipated this album captures the essence of something that falls outside of rock or jazz. It's its own thing and I can still listen to it 30 years later without any loss of integrity to the original musical ideas and spirit that Vini and Martin laid down. If they gave me one album to play during my last meal this would be it.
Black_Hawk_Down.
Black_Hawk_Down.
Beautiful limpid electric guitar work, mostly single note runs rather than chordal. Little bit of jazz guitar and brazillian bossa influence, Vini must have heard Bola Sete before this. Well accented with effects such as echoplex and reverb, good production by Hannett which adds just enough to colour the sound and lifts it above being just another pleasant solo guitar record.
