The Shangri-Las Golden H. has been added to your Cart. Add gift options. While the idea of having a book in this series focus on a greatest hits album seemed a little odd at first, it makes perfect sense both for the period and the thesis Wolin puts forth. The early years of poprock and roll were singles oriented and this was especially true for girls groups. In addition, Wolin is arguing about the place of the Shangri-Las both within the context of girls groups as well as the context of poprock history. As such, a compilation of their singles is the best choice. The one issue I have with the book is that her arguments really need more space to be fully realized. This 1966 compilation gathers a dozen of the the Shangri-Las most memorable selections from their sole long-player Shangri Las '65 1965 and various 45s issued on the Jerry Leiber-owned Red Bird Records. No girl group was quite like Shadow Morton's Shangri-las, who bucked the trend of sweet and cute girl groups and came across as sexy biker chicks. Shadow Morton's penchant for doom and gloom was hip before its time. "Leader of the Pack" is of course a classic teenage death song, but it pales before "Remember (Walking In The Sand)" and the magnificent "Past, Present And Future", both performances becoming much more than mere 'pop music'. Never has tragedy sounded so good! Their reign ended all too quick, but these girls turned out some great singles in just a few years. This collection is pretty good...would have liked to have seen "Dressed In Black" and "He Cried" (the female take on "She Cried" by Jay and the Americans) included. Somehow Mary Weiss seems so very wicked on that number!
Also, I was not surprised to see the Jerry Leiber writing credit on "Past, Present and Future". He would further display some poignant and cynical writing skills on Peggy Lee's great "Is That All There Is?"
