Short intro

Quiet Inlet is the perfect title for this project by the duo Food, co-led by drummer Thomas Stronen and saxophonist Iain Ballamy. An exercise in texture music via electronica, Stronen and Ballamy take their time constructing lush, late-night vistas of layered sounds, with depth more important than pace. Hardly any variation in tempo can be heard, as sparse percussion accents prompt Ballamy's expansive tenor or soprano saxophone sounds. Quiet Inlet. Food, Thomas Strønen, Iain Ballamy 16-04-2010. Total duration:46 min. Iain Ballamy born 20 February 1964 is a British composer, soprano, alto and tenor saxophone player. Ballamy was born in Guildford, Surrey, and educated at George Abbot School, Guildford, from 1975 to 1980. He then studied Musical Instrument Technology from 1980 to 1982 at Merton College. He took piano lessons from age of 6 to 14. He discovered saxophone in 1978 with three lessons and his first professional gig was in 1980. He played Ronnie Scotts as Iain Ballamy Quartet at age 20. He was a founding. UK saxophonist Iain Ballamy's long-running partnership in the Food ensemble with drummer and electronics improviser Thomas Stronen is augmented here by trumpeter Nils Petter Molvaer and guitarist Christian Fennesz and caught live at performances in Oslo and Molde in 2007 and 2008. This is Food's first ECM album a strangely late arrival on the label, considering the unique chemistry of European jazz and electronic atmospherics the band has been cultivating for over a decade. But ECM's scrupulousness about sound quality certainly counts here, and Quiet Inlet vibrates with irre. Album 2010 7 Songs. On four of the tracks, the group is joined by Nils Petter Molvaer on trumpet and electronics, and Christian Fennesz lends guitar and electronics to Tobiko, Mictyris, and Fathom. On Tobiko, which is marked by clattering percussion, hovering chords, and electronic interjections, Ballamy plays a long-note statement on soprano sax that evokes Wayne Shorter. Thomas Strønen's percussion conveys a strong sense of the exotic. His playing is characterised by a sense of Zen-like space, each moment focused upon as it unfolds. He's able to switch from powerhouse rhythmic drive to reflective precision in the flicker of an eyelid. Both Chimaera and Cirrina feature enthralling duets between Ballamy and Molvær, the former dipping and arcing like a swallow in slow motion while Molvær traces mournful vapour trails in a deep blue sky. Mictyris begins in muscular agitation, like a bad dream sci-fi movie, but unexpectedly evaporates into melodic, wistful fragments
