YACHT came out of Portland in the mid-00s as a pair of smart synth-pop noodlers with some cute, crinkly beats and a wide-eyed vibe that can even make worry sound vaguely blissful. Their most popular song, 2011s Dystopia The Earth Is on Fire turned the end of all things into resigned fun. Their sixth album is steeped in sci-fi parody songs like Ringtone and Hologram work a 21stcentury Human League coyness. But YACHT have never been too big on introspect, and avoiding big highs and lows might be one of the reasons theyve hung around after most of the indie-dance bands they came up alongside a decade ago have petered out. At the beginning of I Thought the Future Would Be Cooler, Evans sings, I only learned who I loved when I left them all in the past, and by its end she's shouting, Give me entertainment Death by entertainment It makes for a jarring match. When we're told of mediated war zones and countries full of death over breezy post-disco grooves and light Rhodes chords in Matter, it's like a friend making an off-color joke over text-you're pretty sure they're being sarcastic, but it definitely didn't sound that way. Not all songs that someone thinks could be listened to on a boat count either. Yacht rock originally known as the West Coast sound or adult-oriented rock is a broad music style and aesthetic commonly associated with soft rock, one of the most commercially successful genres from the mid-1970s to early 1980s. Drawing on sources such as smooth soul, smooth jazz, R&B, funk and disco, common stylistic traits include high-quality production, clean vocals, and a focus on light, catchy melodies. Its name, coined in 2005 by the makers of the online video series Yacht Rock, was derived. SiriusXMs tribute to Yacht Rock celebrates the smooth-sailing soft rock from the late '70s and early '80s. Yacht's synth-pop on I THOUGHT THE FUTURE WOULD BE COOLER seemingly hits the right notes: some hipster cool, quasi-meaningful lyrics, catchy melodies. So why doesn't the album as a whole resonate? Well, their promotional hoax didn't help (though they subsequently apologized for it). I mean, there are clever moments, like the verbal reflections on "White Mirror," the odd electronic flourishes on "Matter," or the old school vibe of "Ringtone," but there's also a calculation disguised as spontaneity that makes things sound disingenuous. The grooviness of "L.A. Plays Itself" feels too robotic to encourage a get-down, and "War on Women" should be much more trenchant. It's still enjoyable, but I thought this album would be cooler.
